Our economy works best when government provides the proper framework so each American can pursue their own American dream. Because our economy is dependent upon many factors such as fair tax rates, international trade and federal budget goals and realities, the government must reduce regulatory burdens on businesses and industry and allow free market principles to be the drivers of our economy.

Positions on the Senate Finance, Banking and Budget Committees provide me the opportunity to directly shape policy that impacts Idahoans’ economic wellbeing. Idahoans like all Americans face considerable economic challenges, from inflation to high costs of housing, goods or gas, to health care affordability.

The Senate Finance Committee has the broadest jurisdiction of any committee in Congress and oversees more than 50 percent of the federal budget. My position as the lead Republican on the Committee gives Idaho a strong voice in legislation related to federal tax policy; federal social safety net and health care programs; and implementation of foreign trade agreements. As Ranking Member, I am committed to working on solutions to address our national debt, preserve and build on pro-growth tax policies, ensure Idahoans can receive the health care they deserve and need, and improve our global competitiveness in trade deals.

The Senate Banking Committee has jurisdiction over matters related to financial services, capital markets and housing, among other issues. As a current member and former Chairman, my focus is to ensure America’s capital markets remain the most vibrant and successful in the world; to make sure financial regulations are effectively balanced to promote lending and growth while protecting consumers; and to promote access to affordable housing.

The Senate Committee on the Budget develops a budget framework for congressional action on spending and revenue. With our national debt now reaching excessively high levels, it is essential Congress rein in federal spending and address our nation’s fiscal health. Working collaboratively with my colleagues, I continue to press for reforms that place us on a long-term, sustainable fiscal path.
