Washington, D.C.--U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) joined Senate colleagues in sending a letter to the United States Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) urging her to bring forward a resolution to designate Iranian-backed Hamas as a terrorist organization following the brutal terrorist attacks on Israel since October 7 with the intent to eradicate Israel and the Jews in Israel.
“Recent events have demonstrated that Hamas’ actions, tactics, and stated goals are in many ways indistinguishable from Al Qaeda, ISIS, and other terrorist organizations the United Nations has sanctioned. Therefore, we write to urge you to bring a resolution to the UN Security Council recognizing and imposing sanctions on Hamas as a terrorist organization,” wrote the Senators.
“Since October 1997, the US Department of Treasury has designated Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) as Foreign Terrorist Organizations. Additionally, these groups have been listed as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs) since October 2001. Numerous other countries and international entities rightfully have designated Hamas as a terrorist organization, including Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, Israel, the Organization of American States, Paraguay, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Switzerland is also actively exploring legal avenues to designate Hamas as a terrorist entity,” they concluded.
The letter is led by Senators James Lankford (R-Oklahoma) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nevada), co-chairs and co-founders of the Abraham Accords Caucus and Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Antisemitism, of which Senator Crapo is a member. Joining Crapo, Lankford and Rosen in sending the letter were Senators Katie Britt (R-Alabama), Deb Fischer (R-Nebraska), Maggie Hassan (D-New Hampshire), Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia), Kyrsten Sinema (I-Arizona), Kevin Cramer (R-North Dakota), Cory Booker (D-New Jersey), Pete Ricketts (R-Nebraska), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), John Barrasso (R-Wyoming), John Thune (R-South Dakota), Ted Budd (R-North Carolina), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Bill Hagerty (R-Tennessee), John Kennedy (R-Louisiana), Rick Scott (R-Florida), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee), Thom Tills (R-North Carolina), John Boozman (R-Arkansas), Mike Braun (R-Indiana), Steve Daines (R-Montana), Mark Kelly (D-Arizona), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Mississippi), Dan Sullivan (R-Arkansas), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyoming), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Jerry Moran (R-Kansas), Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), Bob Casey (D-Pennsylvania), Marco Rubio (R-Florida) and Alex Padilla (D-California).
