Gonzales, presently Counsel to the President, to take over as U.S. Attorney General, replacing John Ashcroft. â??Judge Gonzales is very well-qualified to become our next Attorney General and I am confident he will be confirmed quickly by the U.S. Senate. Gonzales has not only a long and distinguished legal career as a lawyer both in Texas and in Washington, D.C., but also has served as a Supreme Court Justice for the State of Texas. â??The Department of Justice has played a lead role in our war against terrorism, and it remains critical the department be headed with a person of Judge Gonzalesâ?? credentials. As Counsel to the President, he has helped in the transformation of our law enforcement efforts in the wake of 9/11.
