Crapo: Iraqi People Need Support

Senator responds to the UN Security Council lifting 13-year-old sanctions

Washington, DC â?? Idaho Senator Mike Crapo released the following statement regarding the United Nationâ??s Security Council vote today to lift sanctions against Iraq:â??For many years, the Iraqi people suffered under an oppressive regime that plundered the countryâ??s natural resources and took the gain for its own benefit,â?? Crapo said. â??The lifting of the sanctions will allow the Iraqi people to rightfully claim what should have been theirs. The resolution that lifts the sanctions gives the international community the opportunity to provide the support needed for the Iraqi people to improve their quality of life and move toward a more democratic form of government. President Bush consistently held to the belief that the United Statesâ?? role in the conflict with Iraq was to remove the dictatorship that held the Iraqi people hostage and to help them install a government that recognizes the power of the people. This resolution does that, and I am pleased that we are continuing to uphold the goals laid out by the President at the beginning of the conflict.â??# # #
