Crapo Pushes for VAWA Reauthorization

Washington, D.C. - Idaho Senator Mike Crapo today delivered a statement on the floor of the United States Senate promoting swift passage of the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).  For nearly two decades, the Act has provided support for programs and initiatives designed to assist victims of domestic and sexual violence.  Senator Crapo joined Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) in introducing the VAWA reauthorization legislation in January, 2013.   

Crapo, a longtime champion of the legislation, made the following remarks:

"For nearly two decades, VAWA has been the centerpiece of our nation's commitment to end domestic, dating and sexual violence.  It is heartening to hear that the number of Idaho high school students reporting they have experienced dating violence has dropped by five percent from 2007-2011.  However, I am saddened by reports that since January first of this year, four deaths have occurred in my state from the result of domestic violence.  Even one is too many.

"While we may not all agree on the specifics of this re-authorization, all of my colleagues agree on one very important idea-violence should not happen to anyone.  This critical legislation is very effective in helping to address that abuse in our society."
