Crapo, Risch Invite Idaho Students To Apply For The United States Senate Youth Program

Students to earn college scholarship, in addition to a trip to Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. - Idaho Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch announced that the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) has begun its statewide selection process. Two high school students from each state, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity will be selected as delegates to participate in the national program to learn more about the federal government.

Idaho students are invited to apply through October 25, 2013.  Selected delegates will travel to Washington, D.C., the week of March 8-15, 2014 for the program's 52 nd annual Washington Week.  Idaho students must be a permanent resident of the United States, a parent or legal guardian must legally reside within the state and students must be currently enrolled in public or private secondary school located in Idaho.  Exceptions to the residency rule are made for the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity and for states with schools under Interstate Compacts.

USSYP was created by Senate Resolution 324 in 1962.  Since then, more than 5,000 students have participated in the unique leadership program.  Selected students will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to hear from Senators, cabinet officers, government leaders and other policy-makers. The delegates will also have the opportunity to visit Capitol Hill, the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, the Supreme Court and other historic sites in Washington.  In addition, students will earn a $5,000 college scholarship.  The week-long program and scholarships come at no cost to the federal government and are made possible by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.

Idaho's student delegates will be selected and formally announced in mid-December.  Students interested in the program, or those wanting to learn more should contact their local high school principal or the state-level selection administrator below:
