Washington, D.C.--U.S. Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) delivered the following remarks at a nomination hearing to consider David Johnson to be U.S. Department of the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA).
As prepared for delivery:
“Thank you, Mr. Chairman, and welcome to our nominee, Mr. Johnson. Congratulations on your nomination and thank you for your willingness to serve.
“This position you have been nominated for carries great responsibility.
“Mr. Johnson, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration is an essential and independent voice overseeing the administration of the nation’s tax system.
“The prior Inspector General, the late Honorable J. Russell George, faithfully served in his role for decades. Under his leadership, TIGTA provided steady, independent oversight – including during critical moments, such as the recent and unlawful theft and disclosure of tens of thousands of Americans’ sensitive tax information.
“The impact of TIGTA’s audit and investigative activities on taxpayers, the IRS and the nation’s tax system cannot be understated. If confirmed, Mr. Johnson, you must faithfully lead TIGTA in executing this role and expand on its capacity to provide oversight and insight.
“You must remain independent and vigilant. You must be responsive and candid. Members of our Committee are eager to hear how you intend to fulfill these responsibilities.
“I look forward to hearing how you would approach this role.
“Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I yield back.”
