Senate Finance Committee Advances USMCA to Full Senate

Crapo votes favorably to revise broken NAFTA trade deal

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate Finance Committee today advanced to the full Senate the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) for trilateral trade.  Before voting for the USMCA, U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), a senior member of the Finance Committee, gave a brief statement in support of the trade agreement, which can be viewed in full at the video below.

“I have long maintained that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) needed to be re-negotiated.  I had concerns with NAFTA because many goods and services originating in the United States received unfair treatment among trading partners.  It also did not provide sufficient market access, nor did it address pricing structures and restrictive trade practices in the dairy sector.

“President Trump and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer’s forceful negotiations on behalf of America’s farmers and workers fulfills one of President Trump’s core campaign promises, and many Americans will see the benefits of this updated trade agreement.”

The House of Representatives approved the USMCA on December 19, 2019, just before Congress recessed for a holiday break.  The USMCA will now go before the full Senate for an up or down vote.
